Something Borrowed, Something Blue

The Denim. Just what is it about this blue cotton fabric that makes it a basic necessity in every fashionista's wardrobe? Its feel and softness? Its lightweight breathability? Its utter practicality and simplicity? Its versatility and timelessness? We may never decipher the secret of denim, but one thing we know for sure, denim will always dominate.

One of the latest reincarnations of denim is something borrowed (from the opposite sex's wardrobe) and something blue... the (love 'em or hate 'em) Boyfriend jeans.

The outfit was simple and nondescript but therein lies the beauty. Boyfriend jeans are essentially minimal, and low-key. It is perfect just for chilling and going around leisurely within the metro. This trend stands out for me because of its perfect fusion of informality and style without even trying. It just proves one can be stylish without having to try so hard and being ostentatious.

A faded pair of Levi 501s (Levi's classic men's jeans) was a requisite for the fashionista in the 1990s. The 90s was the era of the androgynous denim explosion. And with the dawn of the new decade Boyfriend jeans was revived in the late 2008-early 2009 by none other than Katie Holmes. She sported a pair of loose, cuffed jeans with flats while out in NYC. Since then, it’s caught on in a big way (especially with celebs like Rachel Bilson and Victoria Beckham), and became one of the hottest jeans trends for spring 2009. Because of this, the trend can be said to have trickled down from the social elite to the masses. Now in 2010, boyfriend jeans are in fading into the late majority (in the Philippines) and mostly laggard (in other countries). And with the death of this denim trend, we just have to wait and see the new way the denim will be revived in the new decade.
