Denim Forever

Most of us have at least a pair of denim jeans that we are sure look fantastic on us. They feel right, they fit right, and they look right. Denim has never left our wardrobes; a girl can’t do without a pair of trusty old jeans! Over the past few decades we have been truly embracing denim in all forms: day dresses, waistcoats, shorts, crops, and trousers are all getting a denim makeover and it is so fab! Denim is still at the peak of the trend cycle and will forever be a fashion staple. Ever wondered when the idea of using denim for all kinds of clothes was born and how long it took denim finally to be considered a fashion statement, not any more being simple fabric for workers’ clothes?

Here’s a bit of history: In May of 1873, Levi Strauss received a U.S. patent for his denim jeans and especially for the rivets he had incorporated to ensure their strength and durability. The denim jeans were officially born. Since then, they have become a multi-billion dollar industry around the globe.

In the 1950’s film stars evangelized jeans for a new generation, and in recent decades high fashion and consumer culture have combined to make them universal: worn by rappers, fashionistas, discount shoppers, and politicians; embodying fashion and cultural ideas of immensely different segments of society. It is so amazing how denims have evolved from lower to upper economic classes (trickle up theory) and how the masses have adopted this trend.

Since denim jeans are so ubiquitous I didn’t have a hard time spotting them; however, I had difficulty finding the best Fasyon wearing denim jeans. It was after lunch and extremely hot when we tried to spot trends in Greenbelt. So I believe every fashionable mall rat was out of sight. But after two hours of waiting, I was finally able to see a girl wearing denim shorts, a printed tank top, blue ballet flats and a white belt; She looked so laid-back but still nice in them. I especially liked the way the chained bag glammed up her casual outfit.

These Clogs are Made for Strutting!

People-watching is one of the things that I love doing whenever I go around places- like when I travel outside the country, when I hang-out in a mall, when I read a fave book in a cafe, or even when I just wander around the streets of Manille. I like how it instantly gives you energy, as well as a sense of creativity and wonder. Needless to say, the Trend spotting activity that we were assigned to do for the FASHION TRENDS class was something that made me feel giddy and glad.
So one Sunday eve, while I was sauntering around High Street, in a sea of belted denim shorts, gladiator sandals, and floral mini dresses, this girl who is sporting an easy-breezy white V-neck shirt, a pair of belted and ripped boyfriend jeans stood out from the crowd. My eyes could not help but be glued on her fabulous red pair of clogs, that definitely added a total spunk to her semi-androgynous ensemble of boyfriend jeans and shirt. She, along with the 3 adorable girls gamely posed for a few shots.

This chunky pair of shoes, no matter how uncomfortable they looked, has definitely made a comeback this Spring Summer 2010. Let credit be due to Karl Lagerfield for Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, and Miu Miu, as seen on their runway collections.

As I look back, I remembered that my sister and I used to wear jelly clogs as it were all the rage back in the 90’s.
And now, with its resurgence, many styles have been incorporated – from patent to printed, from embellished to studded, from buckled to slingback to ribbed.

It evolved from being a rigid wooden soled, initially used by farmers, miners, workers and other types of peasants as protective footwear, providing warmth and safety. Clogs, are most associated with Scandinavia but were also very popular in the Netherlands, in the 1800. The Dutch found the shoe to be comfortable on their feet, and the shoes, eventually made their way to UK, France, Italy and Spain, with each country creating their own style of clogs for aesthetic and functional reasons.

Basing on this information and how different designers reinvented the clogs throughout the time, the fashion leadership that would best apply to it is the Trickle-Up theory.

Some fashionistas believe that it is the hottest comeback this SS 2010, some, however, are not so thrilled about its revival. In the fashion capitals of the world, I think it has reached the height of the trend popularity as seen on these celebrities (such as Alexa Chung, Mary Kate Olsen and Rachel Bilson), and with international brands, adapting the trend with a variety of price points.

In our country, however, I believe that the clog trend is on its way to Early Adopter Stage. (Increase in Population). The last time I checked, these bulky shoes are now on the window displays and shoe shelves of the popular high end contemporary labels like Zara and Massimo Dutti and even junior brand like Topshop. I suppose we can now expect to encounter a lot of Manila’s fashion enthusiasts to be wearing pairs of clogs here and there.
As for me, I would still contemplate whether I would grab a pair of this shoes, but I suppose that the type of women who would normally wear these are those in the contemporary market, those who follow trends religiously and undeniably, those who believe that sometimes, in fashion, you have to twist an ankle to channel that fierce look. =P

My Fashion Escapade

Going around places gives me so much excitement. My eyes are quick when it comes to spotting girls who are fashionable and seeing how they carry themselves. However, when I went to High Street and Serendra with a friend, I didn’t see anything very interesting, extraordinary and unique to my taste. I think it was because of the time of day – very hot and humid. I randomly bumped into two other friends which made me feel better about not finding anyone. We all ended up eating in Murray d Vines, that served all kinds of burgers, heart shaped. I didn’t want to pressure myself on finding a masterpiece to my project so I decided to just bring my camera wherever I go.

Luck enough, when I attended the birthday party of my friend in B-side, Makati. I wasn’t expecting to see anyone that would interest me, but there I saw Ornusa Cadness. She was stunning in her outfit that immediately I approached her and asked her if I could take her picture. She was very willing so I took the shot.

Several years ago, legwarmers surfaced back on the style radar. This season, the reborn ‘80s fad of choice is footless tights or leggings. Not only have they shown up all over the runways, but they have become favorite fare of young ladies.

The latest fashion trends have become very centered on comfort. People will always like to look fashionable, but now they also take into consideration, feeling good and being comfortable at the same time. Layering leggings under tunics and dresses has been the hottest trend. Gray is the color for Fall 2010, seen in everything from soft dove grays to bright silver.

Ornusa is wearing an attractive black tube dress with a grayish silver draped overlay scarf on top, with black leggings that matched her beige high heels. She was truly a stunning beauty that night when I took her picture. Very elegant..

Tree Life (Tree Life)
http://www.thecoolhunter.net/treelife

Treehouses have become creative eco-statements in the design world. They allow people to literally be "in" nature and peace above the stressful street level of life. The Cool Hunter will invite top local and international architects, artists and designers to design for the event a modern treehouse, created from sustainable and recycled materials

Save Our Society (SOS) - Trees are fast becoming an endangered species. Forests are levelled by the acre to make way for concrete. Why not live in them instead of destroying them?

Down Aging - Some of use had tree houses as children, those who didn't have it dreamed of having one one time or another. It was a castle in the sky, or a fort with your battle plan. Here's this dream realized, but much much more modern than the rickety plywood and tin shack of the your younger days.

Icon Toppling - The idea that civilization was created so that we could stay as far away from nature as possible is outdated. Why can't man live in trees comfortably? We have evolved so much in technology and design concepts that we are more than well equipped to complement nature, not compete with it.

Cashing Out - What could be more back to basics than living in a tree?

EatDrinkChic (Lifestyle)
http://www.thecoolhunter.net/article/detail/1621/eat-drink-chic

EatDrinkChic has a crafty, girly vibe but there are no crocheted polyester-yarn throw cushions or quilted tea cozies here. The blog is about interiors, parties, weddings and food and Amy Moss offers readers DIY ideas which she styles, designs and photographs and offers it all for free to her followers. It won't be long before book publishers come knockin

Cocooning - Who doesn't want a pleasant home to live in? Not only are you getting tips and inspiration on how to do it, but you're also getting tips on how to do it FASHIONABLY

Eve-olution - More and more women are branching out and sharing their ideas and unique point of views that other women can relate to and get inspired from.

Down Aging - What is more nostalgic than a homecooked meal or the smell of freshly baked bread or a perfectly coordinated tea party? These are little indulgences and stress busters that keep you young.

Clanning - Crafters, designers and foodies unite! The cause? Prettifying everything.

Fantasy Adventure - If you want to be a crafty domestic goddess for a weekend, you may do so with a pink and white pastry party using your languishing vintage saucer collection and origami heart invites. After that, it's all living vicariously from your computer at your desk at work.

Pleasure Revenge - It's my free time and I'll do what I want to. If I want to embroider the lyrics of "Bad Medicine" using Pekingese stitch and ancient silk floss from sacred Tibetan silk worms, I will do so. I will make Whoever said that taking up the domestic arts is a betrayal of feminist ideals need to review what feminism is all about (it's about choice) and to be shot in the kneecaps.

illy Cafe In Push Button House (Design)
http://www.thecoolhunter.com.au/article/detail/1087/illy-cafe-in-push-button-house

With the push of a button, the house opens in 90 seconds like a flower and transforms from a compact container into a fully furnished and functional space with a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom, living room and library. All materials used in the Biennale house were recyclable or recycled. As Andrea Illy, chairman and CEO of illycaffe, has been quoted as saying, illy was initially interested in Kalkin's idea as an examination of 'home as one continuous mouldable surface, a relief against which human activity would pop out.'

Cocooning - Old shipping containers as sleek and portable homes? Why not? Any box can be transformed into your own cozy nest with the right elements.

Save Our Society (SOS) - The design is socially and ecologically conscious. Unused shipping containers are converted into sleek mini houses/cafes that can be folded up when business hours are over or if the person leaves the house or the house needs to be moved.

Anchoring - You have done your part. Your house is made out of an old shipping container, pat yourself on the back for giving back to the Earth and having enough sense to reuse something that's not very obvious. It feels fantastic and your friends think you're cool.

Cashing out - Coffee and living need not be a complicated affair and neither does building a house if you choose to live in one container or several. The structure and venue are simplified.

Mamilla Hotel Jerusalem
“Where luxury, lifestyle and heritage meets”
Located in the heart of the City, with magnificent views of the Old City walls, the Tower of David, Jaffa Gate, and alongside Jerusalem's new shopping and entertainment experience, the Alrov Mamilla Avenue. Mamilla Hotel, the newest of luxury hotels in Jerusalem, brings world-class superior design and lifestyle hospitality to Jerusalem and Israel. Guests and visitors will enjoy exceptional accommodations together with exclusive restaurant and bar venues, a Holistic Wellbeing Retreat, as well as events and banqueting spaces, that blend sophistication and modern international style with the unique and rich culture of Jerusalem.
This has been Jerusalem’s premier hotel since my time of conscription. And it has been clicking with a lot of people, probably due to the following Popcorn trends…
1) Cocooning- Jerusalem is a pretty tough place I remember searching for bombs 24/7 in the Holy Land, and with settlement issue riots that come with too. My experiences there have induced paranoia. But every time I step into the hotel, my worries of outbreaks, IEDs, warfare, riots and etc, disappear. During that time, I could be a normal 21 year old.
2) Anchoring- Mamilla gives extravagant guests a chance to be in the Holy Land, where all the religious convene. The Mamilla shopping alley has products like a menorah designed by Jackson Pollock, or Star of David pendants designed by jewelers like Damiani or John Hardy.
3) Egonomics- Like all kinds of hotels, Mamilla has basic hotel services like airport transfers, business centers, lounges, gyms and wellness center. But made it different from my other stays in hotel is their personal host service, my host was like a butler, tourist guide and human Google. Very personalized indeed and he was also hot, so personalized eye-candy.
4) Pleasure Revenge- Mamilla is a very happening place from what I remember. They had good bars where the young and the “religious” hang out. Touring the old city gets a bit restricting, like you can’t curse in the religious sites, cant gossip, can’t wear hoochie clothes and etc. Mamilla gives you a chance to be religious by day and hypocrite at night.

Finger in the Nose
I super love the name of this children’s clothing brand, totally got my attention. Great marketing ploy. A great reason for me to get accidentally pregnant and got to the trendy High Marais district to shop.

This Brand employed the following popcorn trends.

1) Pleasure Revenge- This brand gives parents the chance to be unconventional. Give those kids an unconventional “rock-n-roll” vibe and not be too pa-cute. This gives parents to dress their kids like their “mini-mes” im not even sure if the kids will totally love the outfits they sell, since they are still in love with that drugged purple dinosaur, but I know for sure that their parents will.
2) Save our society- their website keeps stressing that their products are sourced and mad from Europe. We get it!! Their brand doesn’t employ sweatshops in china or Vietnam that unlawfully employs children. And it gets to redundant how the stress that they use quality organic cotton.
3) Small indulgences- it’s not Oshkosh Bgosh. Pretty pricey for children’s clothes, but they look so cool and the claim to be really comfortable and functional.
4) FemaleThink- stain-repellant fabrics means less laundry time for overworked mommies. Let’s us not forget that is it also water-reppellant and antibacterial! Wow!

135hp Ecosse Iconoclast

Iconoclast is the sexiest motorbike. It’s not as cheesy as the Harley Davidson and its biker boys.

Why is it cool? It’s follows some of the popcorn trends

1) Pleasure Revenge- . The engine is turbocharged for even more grunt, and feeds into a Baker Torquebox—one of the few motorcycle gearboxes able to handle sportscar levels of power- very dangerous! Very expensive- £44,000.00 (US$69,000)!

2) S.O.S- It’s machined from solid billet aluminum, and wrapped in a hand-welded custom frame that also stores the engine oil. The bodywork is carbon fiber; suspension comes from the favored brand of MotoGP racers, the Swedish company Öhlins. Lesser weight=less gas consumption

3) Clanning- owners of this bike have a club, like the Harley boys!

4) Down-aging- the buyers of this bike are old, probably with broken backs and heart conditions. This bike is not recommended for them. It might be a way to relive their youth I guess.

Paradise by the Sea

Six Senses Destination Spa defines luxury more than any other spa in the world. It allows the retreatant to experience being in a tropical getaway instead of feeling like she’s getting treatments at a swanky hotel. As the guest arrives, she is immediately escorted to the assessment center. The Spa has no lobby; it removes stiff feeling of hotels.

Each guest is required to go through at least two treatments per day in order to fully utilize their stay at the spa.

A butler is assigned to each guest and they are brought to a villa that is equipped with a private pool, a steam room, and luxurious furniture that allows the guest to dream of living the luxe life (Fantasy adventure). The service is personalized and is customized to each guest in order to suit their needs (egonomics). The spa uses organic cotton that is worn by each guest throughout their stay (SOS). The guest leaves the spa feeling rejuvenated, alive and refreshed (being alive).

A Woman on the Floor

People have been embracing the new trend that is having art in seemingly wrong places. Art galleries are now found in fashion boutiques, cascading chandeliers found as certerpieces in gallerien. In Germain, a new quirky restaurant in Paris, this trend has been the center of its design aesthetic. The restaurant features a massive sculpture that is showcased in, not only it’s first floor but through all three floors of the restaurant. The sculpture is of a yellow woman in heels and an overcoat. It transcends through the floors of all three storeys.

Sitting in a restaurant that has a gigantic woman on its floors creates a feeling of being in a world that can only be imagined (fantasy adventure). Sitting on the first floor, the patron feels like he is in a swanky restaurant that only the “cool kids” go to because of the funky and modern furniture (small indulgences). The VIP floor, however, has the comfortable feel of a house and is creates the atmosphere of hominess and ease (cocooning). The restaurant breaks the norms of art that is seen in a store, restaurant or any establishment. Massive sculptures are seen everywhere but it is very uncommon to see a piece of art that is attached to the floors of all three levels (pleasure revenge).

The Molding of Polar Opposites

In the age of cellphones that can do more than just call another cellphone, the handheld phone has become one of the most defunct gadgets. Cellphones today have been created to perform multiple functions such as surfing the internet, taking pictures, and, even, creating documents and powerpoint presentations.

Connecting with family and friends from all over the world has become so convenient and accessible that it can be done with just a click of a button. One simply needs a computer with a webcam to be able to connect with his loved ones using skype or iChat. This feature also allos both parties to see each other which makes the communication gap smaller. It not only involves hearing the other person, but also, seeing them too.

These programs, however, either use the speakers of the laptop which require the users to talk to each other so loud that they need to be screaming at each other. The other option, the earphones, is attached to the head of the user. All these things are making the “old-school” telephone set a thing of the past and are, therefore, barely used. The YUBZ phone molds the old, traditional hand-held phone with the new, technologically advanced skupe world.

The product, which comes in different colors, may be mixed and matched according to the user’s personality and preference (egonomics). It allows them to be able to “relive” and feel nostalgia as they pick up the phone, just like when they were young (Cashing out and small indulgences). Clicking with the trend of the internet, this product allows the consumer to feel a part of their past right at the desktops (cocooning).

Zzzzzz - Pods

Rest pods are popping everywhere in train stations and airports.

"Yotels" are self-contained sleep pods are equipped with a bed, worktable, High-Def TV and Wi-Fi Access and are located at Gatwick and Heathrow airports in London and Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
"Capsule Inns" are smaller formats that are found in Tokyo and are suitable for a brief comfortable one night rest.
Also in Amsterdam, "Citizen M" has planted 230 mini rooms at Schiphol Airport and a 215-room hotel in Amsterdam City. Citizen M has similar plans are fated to be scattered across Europe, while New York travellers need not wait for too long as it is set to arrive in 2011 by Yotel.

Taking the next step in rest and space efficiency, Russia’s Arch Group designed the SleepBox. Along with an airport version of the rest pod, equipped with the usual, high-tech necessities offered by other companies, "Sleep Boxes" are designed an easy-to-relocate version fit for hostels. SleepBox is meant to “allow very efficient use of available space and, if necessary, a quick change of layout”, making it perfect for hostels where demand and space available often come in conflict with each other. The hostel-specific SleepBox features bunk beds, flip-out tables and sockets for computers or phone chargers.

SCHOOL IS COOL???

Many studies relate productivity to the working surroundings. If so, will a well-designed cafeteria encourage healthy dining of the students? Aside from jail and correctional institutions, school cafeterias are stereo-typed to being providers of uninviting delicacies, could the eating environment contribute to the distaste of menu? And could this be a factor of the flailing performance of students?

The School Food Trust of the United Kingdom seem to think so. In their aim to improve the quality of school food and to promote the health of children, they are creating new school dining environments across the UK by hiring renowned architects to transform dull, lifeless cafeterias into the chosen rendezvous spot on campus.

Nikon D700 Guerrilla Style Billboard

This ad is so interesting because it gives an actual feel of the camera’s function. It is mounted in a busy subway station in Seoul, Korea. Moreover, the passersby, while walking on the red carpet, get the experience of being a celebrity because of the paparazzi ‘act’ where the billboard has life-like images of paparazzi and their flashing camera lights. Accidental superstars then follow the red carpet all the way out of the station into the mall where they can directly purchase the new Nikon D700.

The Trends in this Ad: This cool ad could be a (Fantasy Adventure) because it creates excitement to people especially those who would like to feel special at all times.

Robert Bradford: Recycled Toy Sculptures

Robert Bradford is a London-born and U.K. and U.S. trained visual artist who is also a psychotherapist. He created life-size and latger-than-life sculptures of humans and animals from discarded plastic items, mainly toys but also other colorful plastic bits and pieces, such as combs and buttons, brushes and parts of clothes pegs. In 2002, he started to consider the possibilities that his children’s forgotten toys could have as part of something bigger. Bradford says he likes the idea that the plastic pieces have a history, some unknown past, and that they also pass on a “cultural” history as each of the pieces represents a point in time. Recycling is not his primary concern, but each sculpture certainly keeps quite a few pieces from becoming landfill. Some of the sculptures contain pieces from up to 3,000 toys and sell for £12,000 (US$19,000).

The Trends in this Artpiece: (Down-Aging) is the first trend I thought of for this artpiece because it was created out of Bradford’s idea that the plastic pieces have a history, some unkown past, and that they also pass on a “cultural” history as each of the pieces represents a point in time.

Another trend for this artpiece is (Save Our Society) because it also concerns recycling although it is not the artist’s primary purpose of creation.

This artpiece can go with the trend (Fantasy Adventure) as it is created out of imagination and it creates the feeling of an illusion of a dog made of plastic toys. With this new sculpture, it gives the feeling of uniqueness, artistry, unrealism to consumers.

(Small Indulgences) For art enthusiasts, this sculpture could also be an excellent reward for their interest in the arts.
